Details for the CEANY Thursday, October 29th, 2020 Brown Bag Webinar

Topic: How to Serve the Veteran Population on your Campus

Description: In 2019, SUNY New Paltz, IDMH and the SUNY system held a "Best and Shared Practices for Supporting Military-Affiliated Students" Conference. One of the biggest takeaways from that conference was the need for a Veteran Service Office, or a specific Veteran point of contact on every campus. Every year the VA and DOD increasingly add to their Statements of Understanding requirements that schools take on more administrative services, especially during COVID-19; and schools are going to need to become more well versed than they ever have been in order to serve this special and well -deserving population.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Overview of the 2019 Conference and raw statistical data collected.

    • The new role of a veterans offices and services/resources that need to be provided by the school/office

    • The importance of working with community veteran programs

    • The special needs and barriers of our veterans on a college campus

    •  Q&A portion about how to get non-credit programs approved by the VA

Presenters: Lori Bartkovich, Veteran Specialist II at Monroe Community College

Lori Bartkovich has served as a Veteran Specialist II at Monroe Community College for over 10 years. Monroe Community College's Veteran Services Office is nationally recognized as a leader in serving this special population. Jobs, Military Times and Military Advanced Education. We are also the birthplace of the STARS initiative which educates the college community about the needs, concerns, and challenges of veterans on campus; develops a network of faculty, staff, and administrators willing to provide assistance, support, and advocacy for this population; and provide visible support across multiple campuses for this at risk student group.

Lori Bartkovich has Master's Degree in English Literature from Cardiff University, WALES, and Master's Degree in American History from the College of Brockport.
