Topic: How to Serve the Veteran Population on your Campus
Description: In 2019, SUNY New Paltz, IDMH and the SUNY system held a "Best and Shared Practices for Supporting Military-Affiliated Students" Conference. One of the biggest takeaways from that conference was the need for a Veteran Service Office, or a specific Veteran point of contact on every campus. Every year the VA and DOD increasingly add to their Statements of Understanding requirements that schools take on more administrative services, especially during COVID-19; and schools are going to need to become more well versed than they ever have been in order to serve this special and well -deserving population.
• Overview of the 2019 Conference and raw statistical data collected.
• The new role of a veterans offices and services/resources that need to be provided by the school/office
• The importance of working with community veteran programs
• The special needs and barriers of our veterans on a college campus
• Q&A portion about how to get non-credit programs approved by the VA
