Using Sector Partnerships to Connect Education with Industry: What, Why, How
In today’s economy, few can afford to pursue an education path that does not result in a good job. Yet employers across multiple industries report that today’s graduates are unprepared for the labor market. Whose job is it to prepare individuals for jobs? It’s everyone’s. Sector partnerships are one way of aligning education and training with industry opportunities. They are regional partnerships of companies, from the same industry, with education, workforce development, economic development and community organizations that focus on a set of key priority issues identified by the target industry, often focused on education. For Educators, they are a venue for faster understanding of changing industry needs; a vehicle to identify, build and refine curriculum and credentials; and the only way to create industry-driven career pathway systems. For employers, they are a way to engage with educators as partners, not just customers, to ensure that skilled, knowledgeable jobseekers come their way. For students, they provide assurance that they are choosing the right education at the right time to get jobs in their community.
