CUNY Helps Homeless Veterans

CUNY’s continuing education and workforce programs department provides programming and services for all New Yorkers, including those in specific populations. Homeless veterans are one such population.

Formerly homeless veterans transitioned from shelters to apartment buildings utilizing housing vouchers which are set to expire in 5 years. Unfortunately, this puts these individuals at risk of returning to the shelter system upon the expiration of their voucher.

CUNY helps participants move along an education and career pathway, with the long-term goal of financial independence. Participants develop their education and career goals with a CUNY education specialist. Education vouchers help to cover education or job training programs including all associated program costs. Residents also have access to onsite employment services offered by CUNY staff.

Ongoing assessment will help to ensure this program’s continuous improvement and success.

Community Partnership: Environmental Education and Conservation

Westchester Community College’s Division of Workforce Development and Community Education’s new partnership with the Westmoreland Sanctuary of Mt. Kisco is based on the premise that the health of our environment and natural world depends on the committed generation of today to pass the torch of appreciation, understanding, and respect of the natural world to future generations.

The college is partnering with the Sanctuary this fall to offer these workshops:

  • Bird Banding
  • Guided Hike: Animal Tracks and Signs
  • Wilderness Survival: Shelter
  • Wilderness Survival: Fire
  • Wilderness Survival: Cooking
  • Colonial Candle Making
  • Tree Identification

All classes are held onsite at the Westmoreland Sanctuary. Students register through the college, and then the net revenue is shared with the Sanctuary as per a contractual agreement we’ve negotiated with them.

For more information about this and other partnerships, please contact us at workforceandcommunity@sunywcc.edu.

SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry High School Dual Enrollment Experience

Madison Morley wanted to prepare herself for vet school. In her senior year of high school, she took a SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) course.

She was then offered a summer three credit research internship working with ESF’s Dr. Ruth Yanai in the MELNHE (Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems) lab on the ESF campus where high school students support the lab’s efforts in a forest nutrient cycling project. The lab work includes leaf and root sorting, soil processing, building sap flow sensors and data entry. The internship experience enabled her to present her research project to her peers at part of ESF’s Environmental Summit, held each year on the ESF campus, before her freshman year had even begun!

Turning a Life Around in Eight Short Weeks

Displaced Homemakers accepted into Westchester Community College’s Project Transition Program, funded by the NYS Department of Labor, expect to gain computer skills in the 8-week course. What awaits them is a complete career makeover to prepare for a job in today’s market.

“Training students with computer skills without teaching them how to find a job is like asking a carpenter to build a house with only one tool,” said Barbara Loizeaux, the program’s Job Search Instructor. Resume writing, job search strategies, social media workshops and written and verbal presentation skills are taught in addition to Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and QuickBooks. Immediate feedback is provided by mock interviewers.

“Project Transition supports the mission of the college,” said Ann Rubenzahl, Assistant Dean of Workforce Development and Community Education at Westchester Community College.

For more information, please contact Ms. Rubenzahl at ann.rubenzahl@sunywcc.edu

4 Years as CEANY Member

Former CEANY Consultant for Archive Management

“The biggest truth I have found is from a Robert Burns’ poem: ‘best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.’ All the biggest adventures in my life have been unplanned. The meeting of my husband sixteen years ago, going to school abroad, my archiving position with CEANY, and my most recent position in Veteran Services…all were events that I never in the world would have thought up for myself or considered. I may have given up my childhood dreams of being a Superhero (She-Ra was big back then). But what I have learned since is never to ignore new opportunities that are offered; especially when they are out of your comfort zone. You will always end up learning something new, growing personally and professionally, and expanding your social circle. My most recent adventure led me to meet my nerdy childhood idol: Mark Hamill--where will your next adventure take you?”

Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content

Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content, by Ann Handley, shares some great tips and creative solutions to writing engaging content for your audience. This book is a great resource to learn (or be reminded of) some strategic tactics to make writing easier and less time consuming. These lessons and rules apply across all of your online assets — like web pages, home page, landing pages, blogs, email, marketing offers, and on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media. Handley deconstructs the strategy and delivers a practical approach to create ridiculously compelling and competent content. The book is designed to be the go-to guide for anyone creating or publishing any kind of online content — whether you're a big brand or you're small and solo.
